The Garbage disposal is a powerful kitchen appliance that truly makes our life easier and greener. Greener? Yes.
Garbage disposers take solid food waste that would end up in an a landfill and pulverize it, then send it through your waste treatment system. If that is a city sewer then the waste is handled there as waste water. If you use a septic system, then you have some limitations and other responsibilities for maintaining proper septic system health when using a garbage disposal, but the concept is the same.
Invented in 1927 by John Hammes, the garbage disposal has not changed that much over the years, but recently there are more and more models coming to market with newer features. For example, one of the giants in the garbage disposal industry, InSinkErator®, has a 1HP model called “Evolution Excel” (see photo above) has a newer auto-reversing grind feature. Another company, Viking, has a 3/4HP model #VCFW750 continuous feed disposer with a “Jaminator”, a feature the company claims virtually eliminates jams. Jaminator. Cute.
Another newer product is a garbage disposal designed for septic systems, such as the InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist Garbage Disposal which, among other things, uses a two stage grinding technology and injects microorganisms to assist in the breakdown of food waste in your septic system.
